Grambling’s Matthews, Jack honored by Sheridan

Just received this photo by e-mail from last week’s Sheridan Broadcasting Network’s 35th annual Black College All-America ceremony, where Grambling’s Melvin Matthews and Jeffery Jack were honored.

That’s Matthews, fifth from the right, and Jack, second from the right in the Grambling letter sweater. Both were first-team defensive honorees.

Third-year coach Rod Broadway was also on hand to claim GSU’s 14th mythical black college national championship trophy at the William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh. Henry Frazier III, who led Prairie View A&M to its best record (9-1) since 1964, was named SBN’s coach of the year.

Grambling products James “Shack” Harris and Doug Williams, stars respectively for Eddie Robinson in the 1960s and ’70s, were among the guest speakers.
