Broadway’s streak close to Grambling record for home wins

Grambling’s current winning streak at Robinson Stadium stands at 7, dating back to the hiring of third-year coach Rod Broadway — who has never dropped a game at The Rob.

The record at the facility, which opened in 1983, is 9 in a row — most recently during the 2000-02 seasons under Doug Williams. The Tigers went three years without a stumble in Grambling, and won the SWAC title every time. Eddie Robinson, who coached the team to four unblemished home records, also captured 9 in a row between 1992-94 — falling to Alcorn State to begin the ’92 campaign and then not losing again at The Rob until the ’95 home opener against Central State.

Melvin Spears coached the Tigers through another undefeated slate three seasons ago.

Here are the details on each: 1983 (3-0-1, with wins over Alcorn, Prairie View and Texas Southern and a Valley tie), 1991 (4-0, with wins over Prairie View, Valley, Texas Southern and Florida A&M); 1993 (3-0, with wins over Valley, Texas Southern and Florida A&M); 1994 (3-0, with wins over Alcorn State, Jackson State and Alabama State); 2000 (3-0, with wins over Alcorn, Jackson State and Alabama State); 2001 (2-0, with wins over Alabama A&M and Texas Southern); 2002 (4-0, with wins over Alcorn State, Langston, Jackson State and Alabama State); and in 2005 (4-0, with wins over Alabama A&M, Valley, Texas Southern and Concordia).

Broadway has now added two more undefeated seasons — topping Alabama A&M, Mississippi Valley State, Texas Southern (all in 2007), Alcorn State, Jackson State, Langston and Alabama State (in 2008) in The Rob since taking over at Grambling. That puts him three victories away from setting a new mark.

He must defeat Northwestern State on Sept. 12 and then Alabama A&M on Oct. 10 this year to tie the all-time figure for consecutive wins at Robinson Stadium, then best Mississippi Valley State on Oct. 31 to rewrite the record books.

Curious about the marks for consistency? Grambling only dropped two of 18 games at The Rob over the five seasons between 1991-95 under Robinson, and then only two of 16 home contests over the five between 1999-2003 under Williams.
