Just last Monday, Grambling (6-12 overall; 2-1 in SWAC West) was completing a series against Texas Southern. The Tigers went 2-of-3 in that rain-delayed set.
“We intend to make a statement,” first-year Grambling baseball coach James Cooper told me, as the team rattling along on another seven-hour bus ride. “You can put us on the road for 2 weeks in a row, and we’ll rise to the occasion.”
The Texas Southern series fit into a larger goal for Cooper and Co. this season — “we want to at least split on the road,” he said, “and win every game at home” — but likely made this stretch tougher still by being delayed an extra day because of weather.
That gave Prairie View, playing host to GSU in a doubleheader today and a single game on Sunday, an opportunity to stop by and scout the Tigers.
“They took some notes,” Cooper concedes. “We’ll have to pay attention to the little things, and maybe use some new wrinkles.”
Wrinkles like improved base running. Cooper said Grambling is 19-of-23 in stolen base tries through last week.
Today’s doubleheader begins at noon; Prairie View and GSU face off a final time at 1 p.m. Sunday.
