Complete black college football polls, Week 6: Alabama State reigns; No. 2 is the question

Alabama State is tops on the Sheridan Broadcasting Network, Heritage Sports Radio Network, Dr. Cavil’s Black College Major Division Football Top 10 and Urban Sports News poll, after besting Texas Southern 43-28 last week. Just who ranks at No. 2, however, is in doubt.

“Alabama State is playing the best football in the country right now period,” said John Posey, CEO of Urban Sports News. “They have a strong linebacking corps and a talented secondary. They face a tough Prairie View team Saturday in a battle of SWAC division leaders.

Jackson State is at No. 2 on both the Dr. Cavil’s and USN lists. Both Alabama State and Jackson moved into the Sports Network’s national polling, as well. Surprising Norfolk State is at No. 2 on the Sheridan and Heritage Sports Radio Network Top 10s, and has also entered the FCS Now Poll. Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman continued its free-fall, losing for the third time in its last four games — this time, 22-3 at North Carolina A&T. Bethune subsequrntly dropped out of the Urban Sports News Top 10.

“Jackson State has righted the ship and is playing to their potential,” Posey said. “Maybe the other polls will get religion and rank JSU where they belong. JSU was ranked below Albany State and Bethune by Sheridan last week. … Keep your eye on Howard, Alabama A&M, Morgan State and North Carolina A&T. Norfolk’s season will be determined over the next two weeks. They host Hampton and Bethune. Alabama A&M and Prairie View are trending up in our eyes. FAMU and Stillman could break into the Top 10 with wins coupled with losses from key teams.”
