Complete black college football polls: Jackson State tumbles after upset loss to Grambling

An upset loss to Grambling has sent Jackson State cascading down the black college polls.

Jackson State is now at No. 7 in the Sheridan Broadcasting Network rankings, and No. 4 according to the Dr. Cavil’s Black College Major Division Football Top 10. The Southwestern Athletic Conference program fell to No. 6 on the Urban Sports Network list. Despite the loss, however, Jackson State remains the highest polling HBCU in the national Sports Network poll of Football Championship Subdivision teams.

Winston-Salem State sits atop the Sheridan poll, which includes lower division black colleges, after its 34-7 win over UNC-Pembroke. Winston-Salem State finishes the season undefeated for the first time since 1978. The victory virtually assured the Rams of one of six regional bids in their area to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Urban Sports News black college poll also has Winston-Salem State at No. 1, followed by SWAC foes Alabama State and then Alabama A&M. Norfolk State is the top-ranked Mio-Eastern Athletic Conference program according to both USN (at No. 4) and Dr. Cavil’s (No. 3).

“This has been a crazy season with upsets dotting every week’s scoreboard,” said Urban Sports News CEO John Posey. “There is more balance in the MEAC and SWAC than we’ve seen over recent years. I tip my hat to Winston-Salem State for making the long trek to the top of our rankings. They just win every week without a lot of fanfare. Grambling has come back from the dead and has an outside chance to win the SWAC West if Prairie View falters in its final two games and the G-Men win out.”

Alabama A&M, perhaps the hottest HBCU team in the nation with seven straight wins, is at No. 2 on the Sheridan list — followed by Bethune-Cookman, that poll’s highest-rated MEAC team. Alabama A&M gets its due in the Heritage Sports Radio Network and Dr. Cavil’s rankings, however, surging to the top spot.

Grambling is just outside the Top 10, according to Sheridan; at No. 8 according to Dr. Cavil’s and at No. 10 on the Heritage poll.

  2. It's time to give Norfolk State it's due. The polls are bias toward the SWAC teams even though they haven't played anybody of any caliber. Besides beating the weaker teams in their lower division who have they played? Norfolk State's only losses came at the hands of Bethune Cookman who is ranked no less than 7th in all the black college polls and a nationally ranked West Virginia team who were 14 in the country at the time NSU played them. They gave them a scare for a half.
