Questioning the job Prairie View’s Henry Frazier has done? Really?

Henry Frazier, a season after taking Prairie View A&M to the top of the SWAC mountaintop, has struggled through a rash of injuries finally to get to .500.

That meant rebounding from a depressing three-game skid, but not before some people became upset enough to question the direction of the program. Frazier said he’s received a rash of angry emails and phone calls.

How very quickly we forget.

“It was like we went back to the 80-game losing streak,” Frazier said, marvelling a bit over how the fates so swiftly turn in college football. “We’re not changing what we are doing. This didn’t happen overnight. I had 27 injuries this year — and 12 were season ending. It’s been unbelieveable. We have to make some adjustments for that — but we are not going backward in terms of how were building the program. … We believe we have built a solid foundation.”

Of all the bandaged players, none was more critical than quarterback K.J. Black, who Frazier said is still not 100 percent after hurting his knee last spring: “We’re getting close. He’s doing some things he couldn’t do a couple of weeks ago. I think to gain that confidence, it will come with reps.”

Black had perhaps his best outing of the year in last Thursday’s ESPNU game, completing 24-of-32 passes for 199 yards and a score to top Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

“We are at the midway point,” said an even-keeled Frazier, as he prepares for a non-conference contest Saturday against Lincoln. “We still have five games to be played — and I think his best football is still ahead of him. He’s not playing bad football, but we have gotten accustomed to him doing things a certain way. I’m OK with his progression.”

Just as Frazier makes no excuses for way he’s led Prairie View back from the wilderness, he makes none over these injuries, either.

“It’s part of football,” he said. “You don’t want this, but that’s part of it.”

  1. That is the craziest thing I have heard this year. You are right, people are tripping to mess wit that dude about the losses this year. Not one of their losses have been that halftime comedy shows of the past teams. Even at FBS USM, after halftime adjustments, they held USM to 3 points. That is so crazy, I will send him an encouragement tonight. Good article, thanks
